Ancient Greece - Magna Graecia - Greek Colonies South Italy
Apulia (Ca 360-350 BC) Apulian, large decorated Red-Figure Bell Krater by the Painter of Athens (Plain Period)
The obverse of the vessel depicts a Komos scene with a woman dressed in flowing chiton holding a patera of fruit in one hand and a thyrsus floral wand in the other. She is pursued by a naked youth who holds a mirror and, what appears to be a decorated situla, on which is shown a small figure. Random floral devices fill the field. The reverse shows the usual scene of two youths in profile, each enveloped in his himation and holding a staff. Between them is shown a writing diptych through which is threaded a stylus. The whole scene rests on a band of 'meander' pattern while under the wide lip is a finely painted frieze of laurel leaves. Palm fronds and florals fill the field under each handle.
