Ancient Greece Magna Graecia - Greek colonies in South Italy.Apulia (Ca 340-330 BC)
Large decorated, red-figure bell Krater by the Darius-Underworld Painter Workshop
The vessel is decorated, principally, with two profile heads each styled as a 'lady of fashion', the images are enlivened with the use of added white and yellow. Each head is slightly different but both wear hoop earings with drops and a beaded necklace.
Their hair is dressed below a radiate stephane and kekyphalos. In each of the fields is a diptych and writing stylus and a small vine tendril. The area under the handles is filled with stylised palm fonds supported by florals.
The use of a wave pattern border below and leaves above, plus the distinctive style of the features; long straight nose, rounded chin and downward turned mouth all point to this being the work of the Painter of the Kassel Cup, within the Darius Group.
This attribution is further strengthened by the triangular white bow-loop at the top of the hair, which is yet another charateristic associated with this Apulian artist.
