This is a card case with a wonderful historical connection. The pictorial view is of the Chateau of Madam De Stael overlooking Lake Geneva, which is confirmed by the paper label on the base. Mme De Stael became by reputation, the woman most hated in the world by Napoleon Bonaparte. Due to her outspoken Liberal views. However, in 1793 during the period of the “Terror” life in Paris became so dangerous that she moved her salon to the family residence at the Château de Coppet near Geneva, Switzerland to which her father had retired in 1790. Thus, Coppet became the anti-Bonapartist headquarters of the cosmopolitan “Groupe de Coppet”, which gradually grew in size. Its different members came from many different horizons and the idea of a plurality of nations first took form here. Napoleon’s hostility towards her made her famous throughout Europe. The piano hinge and thumb press release are in perfect working order. The interior is lined with deep purple plush velvet in perfect condition. Superb quality, super condition and absolutely unique.
