An unusual Edwardian survivor from the prestigious London cigar
merchants of St James; an Edwardian pottery cigarette box with its
original lid, made in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire by Fielding Co.
The oblong box is decorated on all sides with black and white
transferware prints. The rare Yenidje tobaccos were part of
Sobranie's oldest blend.
The Sobranie tobacco company was started in London in 1879 by a
family of original Russian descent, who emigrated to the Balkans
and then to London. This box still bears the original label of the
world famous tobacco business begun when Robert Lewis, who began
trading fine tobacco in St James's Street in 1787, supplying
Gentlemens' clubs of the time, and later foreign and British
Royalty, the officers mess of British regiments, and countless
historical and literary figures, including Oscar Wilde and Winston
Churchill.
