This is a delightful travelling set. The board/box is a mere 6 inches square and 4cm deep. The box is a mixture of woods with ebony, or rosewood and ivory squares and ivory in the stringing around the board. The king is just over 1.5 inches excluding the peg. The strong aspect of this set is the quality and clarity of the carving which makes the set very playable indeed. There is no doubt that this was made as a playing set, and not just an ornament. The pieces are housed in two felt lined draws. We believe this is 19th century and considering the quality and style of the knights probably European.
