A Swiss made 8 day watch by Octava Watch Co issued to British Royal Navy pilots during the first world war. The case has snap-on front & rear covers & a hinged inner rear cover, all close firmly & evenly. The rear cover has the large War Department arrow mark, this size of arrow is normally used by the Royal Navy which would suggest that this watch was for pilots of the Royal Naval Air Service. The plating on the front cover is worn away down to the brass. The dial is marked 8 DAY NON-LUMINOUS MARK V. B.G. No 2000 it is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks, just a tiny flake in the centre of the sub' seconds dial. The glass has a few scratches. The movement is marked OCTAVA WATCH Co SWITZERLAND 15 FIFTEEN JEWELS 3 ADJUSTMENTS U.S.A.P. 816321. It is running well & keeping good time. These watches originally had no bow as they were designed to be placed in a holder in the cockpit when flying, they were very expensive, if the aeroplane was crashed & the pilot survived, he was expected to rescue the watch & take it back with him. A very rare piece of WW1 history.
