THE VEILED LADY, a bonded white marble bust, after the antique by Raphaelle Monti, 1875. Signed A Frilli Florenze Italy
Raffaelo Monti (1818–1881) was an Italian sculptor, author and poet born in Milan. He studied under his father, the noted sculptor Gaetano Matteo Monti. By way of Vienna and Milan, he came to London in 1848, and settled there.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy, and Monti soon earned recognition for his piece for the 6th Duke of Devonshire, the "Veiled Vestal." A bust based on this work, cast in Parian porcelain by Copeland, was issued in 1861 by the Crystal Palace Art Union.
Monti produced sculptures working in marble, but he also created in metals and porcelain, while he remained active in the applied arts.In Italy during the 1700s, sculptures of veiled figures peaked in popularity, affording artists the chance to demonstrate their ability to delicately carve marble. Nearly two hundred years later, artists revived this technically demanding tradition in reaction to the academic neoclassicism of the early-19th century. Raffaelo Monti is known for marble busts draped in filmy veils such as this one, subtly modeled to suggest feminine allure.
