Victorian Pinchbeck Long Guard or Muff Chain. Length: 54 inches. Date circa 1900. Pinchbeck is made by mixing two alloys together to produce a metal which resembles gold but isn't. It was used extensivley in the 18-1900's to make small pretty items, chains, lockets, rings, all types of jewellery. It was cheaper to produce than gold. When gold started to be refined and different carats of gold were produced. things started to change and the higher classes were able to reproduce there pinchbeck items in real gold. The sercret of pinchbeck died along with its creator Christopher Pinchbeck. the links measure 3mm across.
