Rare Victorian Fairing: Captioned "In Chancery" |

A fine and very rare fairing with a satirical caption "In Chancery" by Conta & Boehme incised no. 3355. The fairing is modelled as two young farmhands sitting at either end of a cow, each holding the cow's ears and tail and attempting to pull the cow in half while a lawyer milks the cow - in other words, there is only one winner - the lawyer. The fairing being in superb condition, is well-modelled and painted in fine detail, for instance the milk pail and the lawyer's book which is usually painted in block colours, if at all. Scratched numerals and mark on the base. A great piece of social history and offered in lovely condition.
