Highly Cut Lead Crystal Claret Jug c.1840 |
|
Dateline: Circa 1840 |
Item# 34998 |
|
|
|
The jug has a cylindrical body and a pedestal base. The rim is decorated with small, circular wedge cuts. Just below the rim, on either side, between the handle and the lip, are three prism cuts. This decoration continues on the neck, where there are six bands, extending about two-thirds of the way around the circumference.
The shoulder is cut with broad flutes and the main part of the body of the jug is cut with parallel mitred incisions whose edges touch. These are crossed at right angles by a second series of the same mitred incisions. Where tow mitres cross, a raised four-sided diamond or pyramid with a sharp apex is formed. This motif is known as relief diamonds, raised diamonds or deep-cut diamonds.
The pedestal is plain but the base is star cut on the underneath and decorated on the outside edge with vertical mitred cuts adjacent to each other, forming a continuous notched pattern.
The handle is decorated with a series of elongated flutes.
The jug is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. There are some very minor wear and tear scratches to the underside of the base, which are to be expected after 170 years!
Condition: Excellent
Dimensions: Height 24.5cm, Width at rim 9.0cm, Circumference about 35.2cm. Base diameter 11.4cm.
