|
A good quality late 19th century "Empire" style centre desk top inkwell and hinged cover. The hinged sarcophagus design compartment surmounted by a finely worked Sphinx and supported on ball feet. In turn enclosing two cut glass wells with star burst bases. The centre panel below and on the plate of the compartment furnished by a "Isis" dedication. The shallow tray with pen receptacle and cast bosses to the shaped and inverted corner oblong stand. The edge of both the stand and face of the casket decorated with cross check border. The base metal being bronzed. The piece epitomises the style and fortune of the latter part of the 19th Century and was certainly made in England at that time, probably Birmingham. Egyptology being at the forefront of both style and building up to the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922. This inkwell would grace a fine partner's desk in an office of good standing.
