An early 19th Century version of a 17th Century Nurnberg Noah Plate made from the original 1609 moulds. Confused? - please read on... The central motif is of Noah offering thanks to God after the safe landing of the Ark. The inscription can be translated roughly as 'Noah leaves the Ark and offers God his thanks'. The date '1609' is when the iron moulds were engraved. In the panels on the rim are four panels illustrating scenes from the Book of Genesis. This is a well-documented late version from the original 17th Century iron mould commissioned by the Nurnberg pewterer called Paulus Oham Senior (1604-1634). Such iron relief moulds were expensive and durable and were passed on through the years until the fashion for such plates died out around the year 1670. The moulds survived WW1 and communism and are still held at the Arts and Crafts Museum in Leipzig. In the early part of the 19th Century, the moulds were acquired by an unknown Master Pewterer who made plates from them 'touching' them with his mark - a sign of his pride in his workmanship (see his mark in the bouge at 6 o'clock). This unusual, late, plate is in good company - at least 3 fine collections have one.
