A rare example of a Minton ewer in the Sèvres shape, this piece fully decorated and inscribed which is most unusual. Described in the Minton records as a 'Sèvres Ewer', the shape is a faithful copy of the 'pot à eau a la Romaine à ornements'.
The handle attaches at the lower terminal with organic shell and leaf forms in relief and divides at the upper terminal to meet the ewer to either side of the neck. The handle strap is modelled with palmate leaves, the whole embellished with gilding. So far, this is the form of Minton Sèvres ewer occasionally encountered. This example is evidently specially commissioned for presentation, painted with garlands of pink roses surmounting the inscription to the prow in cursive gilded script 'Presented to J Kirkman Esq. /'Pipes and Strings'/By his Friend G Simpson'. The off-side of the ewer is hand gilded with bars of the music 'Woodman spare that tree', within continuous garlnds of painted forget-me-nots.
The near side of the piece is hand painted with extraordinarily fine work, a large flower group superbly arranged in the space to feature golden yellow hollyhock, purple primulas and other garden flowers.

Dimensions: 10.25" at highest to spout.
