A very attractive coffee cup and saucer made at the Tettau porcelain factory in Upper Franconia, Germany c.1870s/80s . Hand painted in blue under the glaze with the onion pattern, and bearing the underglazed blue mark of the period. This pattern was first used by Meissen in the eighteenth century and then copied by other factories. The Tettau factory was founded in 1794 by Johann Schmidt from Coburg and the brothers Wilhelm Greiner and Georg Greiner from Kloster Veilsdorf under the patronage of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II. Using a more greyish paste than other Germany porcelain manufactories, the factory at first concentrated on normal household items as well as coffee, tea and cocoa sets but soon also started to create complete dinner settings. During the later years, Wilhelm Heinrich Immanuel Greiner's son Balthasar was also involved; however he did not share the same interest in the factory and sold it to Ferdinand Klaus in 1852.
