Victorian Brown Glazed Harvest Jug with Plated Rim |
Dateline: Mid 19th Century |
Item# 35059 |
This is a lovely example of a Victorian harvest jug.
The lower part of the body is bulbous, tapering in towards the base. The upper part is broadly cylindrical, opposing sides having been ‘folded’ inwards to form a spout. The rim has an applied metal band, which has been attached by rivets. The inner bulbous portion of two of these is missing. There is no mark but I believe this is silver – plated.
The handle is of strap form. The body of the jug is decorated with a variety of motifs relating to the harvest. These are ‘sprigs’ i.e. moulded designs that have been attached by hand to the piece. These designs include windmills, huntsman and hounds chasing a stag, a weeping willow, and various male figures. At the base of the handle there is a sprig in the form of a metallic strip with screws, implying that the handle is held on in this fashion. Interestingly, a partial fingerprint from the artist is visible in the centre of this strip.
The upper part of the jug is glazed in chocolate brown and the lower part is beige.
Condition: Excellent
Dimensions: The height of this piece is approximately 19.0cm.
