English Porcelain Teabowl - Factory Y |
Dateline: Circa 1795 |
Item# 36017 |
A porcelain teabowl, the body with sharply-moulded spiral fluting. 24 flutes rising from left to right. The porcelain is of a hard grey body. Decorated over the glaze with simple sprays of pink roses and with a decorated rim inside and out. The bottom of the bowl is painted with a basket of flowers. I have attributed this piece to Factory Y on the basis of body composition, the shanked moulding type and the painted decorative elements. For information: Factory Y is the name given to the as-yet-unknown maker of a group of porcelain wares in a similar style and body to those of New Hall. The factory is thought to have been fairly short-lived, active only between 1790 and 1800. Because of the type of body used, it is likely that Factory Y was situated in North Staffordshire alongside the aforementioned New Hall factory, the Keeling (Factory X) and Thomas Wolfe (Factory Z).
Condition: Good
Dimensions: Diameter: 3 1/2 inches (8.5cm); Height: 2 inches (5 cm) approximately Weight: 82g
