Montague Dawson is one of the 20c leading Marine Artists. He lived as a boy in Smugglers House, Southampton Water.Joining the Royal Navy for WW1, he then moved to Milford on Sea.He exhibited at the R.A. from 1916 until 1936. He died in Sussex in 1973. "Horn A Beam" depicts Sir Francis Chichester's Gypsy Moth 1V rounding the Horn. Single handed Sir Francis battled the elements and this painting shows vividly the perils he undertook in his singlehanded circum-navigation of the globe. The yacht is under just one small sail and fights against huge waves of white spume and deep grey skies .A truly magnificent sight!.
