ANECDOTES & INCIDENTS OF THE DEAF & DUMB was printed in 1886 in the hope of raising funds for the Midland Deaf & Dumb Institution, Derby. The anecdotes and incidents report go back to the beginning of the centary and are centred both in England and America. Besides moving stories of bravery and suffering there is a table showing the type of hand signing then in use, statistics of the number of deaf and dumb, statistics showing the possibility of close relationship being partly responsible, occupations of both men and women afflicted. A rare opportunity to obtain a very hard to find book on an emotive subject. On reviewing the book I was surprised by the compassion shown in an era one does not always associate with such emotions. The binding is particularly nice, with gold inlay on spine and front cover. The end plates display a rather strange wash, not unattractive but whether original I do not know. An inscription dated 1889, This is a first edition of a book which ha been reprinted and which is valued by those seeking to improve knowledge of this most unhappy condition. Contains very pretty drawings.
