A Russian 1878 Hallmarked Silver Torah Pointer |
Dateline: Dated 1878 |
Item# 36921 |
A Russian hallmarked silver Torah pointer 12 inches long. The Russian 84 silver hall mark is stamped Warsaw 1878, there are two names that correspond with the marks. One is Sosnkovski the assayer and Sosokovskiy (in Russian).
From 1852-1899, an Imperial Russian Assay Office was functioning in Warsaw, the city mark was the Imperial Eagle. This mark is often confused with those of Minsk or Kamenetz-Podolsk but this “Yad” is definitely from Warsaw. During the later part of the 19th century there was a large and active Jewish population in Warsaw, my paternal grandparents emigrated from there during the last decade of the century.
The Star of David has a small amethyst inset. There are some small dents on the main body otherwise in excellent original condition. Weighs 42 grams.
Condition: Very Good
Dimensions: 12 inches long Weight: 42 grams
