Late 19th century Russian Icon |

|
A late 19th century engraved brass Russian Icon on a wooden frame. There is a Russian signature on the borttom right, I believe it to be Gosha. There are two other symbols on the Icon, one of which I believe to say Madonna and Child. The use and making of icons entered Kievan Rus' following its conversion to Orthodox Christianity in 988 AD. As a general rule, these icons strictly followed models and formulas hallowed by Byzantine art, led from the capital in Constantinople. As time passed, the Russians widened the vocabulary of types and styles far beyond anything found elsewhere in the Orthodox world. Russian icons are typically paintings on wood, often small, though some in churches and monasteries may be much larger. Some Russian icons were made of copper. Many religious homes in Russia have icons hanging on the wall in the krasny ugol, the "red" or "beautiful" corner.
Condition: Excellent
Dimensions: Overall measures 5.5 x 8 inches, 14 x 20 cms. The Icon measures 5.5 x 4.5 inches, 14 x 11 cms.
