A brass vesta of good quality formed as a horse's fetlock where the hinged hoof opens for storage of matches. The workmanship and decoration of this vesta is particularly good with embossed detail to represent the horse hair of the leg and a smooth surface to the horse hoof. The reverse of the hinged hoof lid is embossed to depict the horseshoe. The lid has a strong hinge and the lid opens and snaps down solidly. There is a loop on the top of the fetlock for attaching to a watch chain or chatelaine and the striker is on the reverse. A good quality warm-toned brass and very skilled workmanship combine to make this a rare and very collectible piece.
