Shoe Buckle: Solid Silver: Clear Maker's Mark |

The date is only a guide - there is no date letter. Please see a good guide to Makers' Marks, for example, Jackson's Silver and Gold Marks, to research this further. The Maker's mark on this buckle is easy to see and is a scripted letter 'B', surmounted by a crown. It may be that 'J' and 'B' are conjoined - and so the Maker is 'JB'. (See, if you wish to research this yourself, Jackson (Third Edition, 1989) . Page 123 shows very clear and similar letters for Makers in the mid to late 17th Century.) But we do need to find 'JB' surmounted by a crown. The buckle is believed to be from a shoe. Please see the photographs to decide this for yourself. This is an unusual small piece of silver - it might make a suitable gift for either an experienced or new collector. Of note is the clear maker's Mark. The piece may be over 350 years old.
