UNCLE TOM'S STORY OF HIS LIFE from 1789 to 1877 was specially edited by John Lobb for young people and the address by Uncle Tom whose real name was Josiah Henson, is addressed to the young people of Great Britain, together with a preface by The Earl of Shaftesbury, celebrated for his work with children. Fifth thousand, dated 1877, hence an early editon. It would seem this edition is harder to find than the full adult edition. Inscription "Amelia Kear May 13 1878."..Some erased pencil-written words on Preface page. Due to the front end plate having been removed there is some slack on the spine. Charming illustrated boards showing the young family creeping away from the plantation. Appendix gives an account of the re-habitation of young offenders through training instigated by the Earl and describes a visit by "Uncle Tom" to the industrial training schools. Truly an interesting account of social progress
