This is a superb quality early 20th century spirit decanter, by the Richardson Glassworks.
The decanter is broadly square in section, the corners having been ‘cut off’. Each of the four sides is decorated with a cut design, consisting of two large elongated criss-crosses side by side, with a lattice of three rows of interlocking small criss-crosses within the diamond panel between the two large criss-crosses. In addition, the upper limbs of the large criss-crosses contain a three-pointed fan. There is a band of four horizontal ‘leaf’ cuts just above the base. The base is star cut, and is marked at the edge with the words ‘RICHARDSON BRITISH’.
The short neck is cut with eight panels, thus being octagonal in section. These panels continue downwards over the shoulder and upwards to the underneath of the wide, everted rim. The hollow blown stopper is of ball form, with a star cut apex.
It is in excellent condition, considering its age. There are one or two minute chips to the design on the decanter and stopper, consistent with the age of this piece.
